Autumn is looking bright!

Treat yourself to the best colours and brighten the darker days...

As you turn the clocks back you realise that another summer has gone and outdoor activities are put on hold. The good news is the long winter evenings are often the time when you can get stuck into some serious painting and drawing: building up some stock if you are a professional, trying some new techniques or just switching off the world outside and losing yourself in the joy of creating a new artwork.

For most of us, every drawing or painting is an experiment. What happens when you press a bit harder? Did those colours combine in the way you really expected? Why does your work not quite have the same depth and vibrancy you have seen others achieve? Are you just a bad workman or are your tools letting you down?

Well, sometimes it is the tools. If you have never used the best artists' quality paints you don’t know what you have been missing. They have been made with no compromise on the choice of pigments, the amount of pure pigment in relation to the binder is optimised and the binder has been chosen and formulated with great care. This might make the paints a bit more expensive, but they really do perform.

In combination with Winsor & Newton, Bovilles are giving you the chance to “Try the Best for Less”. Over the next couple of months Winsor & Newton's Artists Oil Colours, Artists Water Colours and Artists Acrylic Colours are on offer: buy two get one free. (In any combination - you can even buy some oil colours, some water colours and some acrylics in the same basket! It will be the cheapest that is free, but it's still a great offer)

Sometimes we know that choosing the right art materials can be a bit confusing. Even when choosing a tube of paint you may have to consider exactly what the difference is between soft body and heavy body, why is one make cheaper than another, do you need any special mediums to use with the paint and what do the different mediums do? That's where a visit to a real art shop like Bovilles comes into its own. Our staff deal with these questions every day: many of them are practicing and competent artists themselves and are always happy to guide you in the right direction. If you are the practicing and accomplished artist, they are equally happy for you to point them in the right direction! That way we can pass on your hints and tips to other artists and play our part in fostering the local artistic community.

Now that's good old fashioned social networking!

We were discussing our favourite artists the other day and Gustav Klimpt came quite high. He was very fond of incorporating gold paint and gold leaf into his pictures – does this mean he had a gilt complex?
